A Gentleman in Moscow

Sounds Good is a monthly series from Emily about all things audiobooks. If you want to go back and view my posts from our previous website, you'll find them (and all the other posts from 2023-2024) on this page. Here's my very first post.

I just finished the most wonderful book on audio: A Gentleman in Moscow, read by Nicholas Guy Smith. It's the story of an aristocrat living under house arrest after the Bolshevik Revolution. The story starts in 1922 and zooms in and out on important periods of Russian history until 1954. The political and societal upheaval of these decades are viewed through the eyes of Count Alexander Rostov, who is confined to the luxury hotel where he used to be a guest. How he adjusts over the years, reinvents himself, and the relationships he forms, make for a leisurely and enjoyable read. I loved the characters and the playful descriptive style of the author. I will certainly be reading more by Towles and keeping an eye out for Smith as a reader. It's an older title, published in 2016, and you can get it on Libby if you don't mind a little wait ("Available Soon" is the current status), or you can get one of the many available copies on CD through LINKcat.
