The Empire Prairie once covered much of northern Dane and Columbia counties, including what is now Waunakee. Today only a very tiny fraction of this amazingly biologically diverse grassland remains in the form of scattered remnants. Scott Fulton, president of The Prairie Enthusiasts and a Wisconsin Master Naturalist volunteer, will discuss the importance of prairies. Learn about how these remarkable ecosystems came into being, their fascinating relationship to humans and efforts to protect, restore and study the little that remains. A companion naturalist-led field trip to the new Hauser Road Prairie Preserve just north of Waunakee will be held on Saturday, September 9.
